Smatya Wathawathana
Smatya was born in 1988, Bangkok, Thailand. She started to play the cello at the age of 11. She studied cello private lesson with Martin Grund, Juris Lakutis, and Kittikhun Sodprasert. She had participated in several symphony orchestra, both domestically and internationally. Smatya first joined Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra in 2005 when she was studying in College of Music (Pre-college programme), Mahidol University. Then, she received a bachelor degree of Arts with First Class Honors and Gold Medal from Chulalongkorn University, Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts. For her master degree, she explored her role of music in health care in music therapy program, College of Music, Mahidol University. She is now a student in Doctor of Philosophy Program in Development Administration, Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University.
She had won First Prize from Princess Galyani Vadhana International Ensemble Competition (PGVIEC) (2013), First Prize from International Youth Chamber Music Competition, Interlaken, Switzerland (2005) and Gold Medal Prizes from the Settrade Youth Music Competition (1999, 2001, and 2003).
Smatya is now teaching cello at Chulalongkorn University, Assumption University,
Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University and Harrow International School. She is also a music therapist at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital where she uses her knowledge and skill in music therapy to help elderly with Dementia.
