Sounds of the Sea
Passionate and exuberant Brazilian conductor Ligia Amadio returns to interpret Debussy’s watery masterpiece, La Mer, as we mark the centennial of the great Frenchman’s passing. The spirit of Poland and the beauty of bel canto are well in the foreground in Chopin’s exquisitely fresh and vital First Piano Concerto with the young Thai virtuoso Anant Changwaiwit in the soloist seat. Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides and Thai traditional music Khluen Krathop Fang (Waves Crashing on the Shore) help create an aural painting of the sea.

Synopsis:
Passionate and exuberant Brazilian conductor Ligia Amadio returns to interpret Debussy’s watery masterpiece, La Mer as we mark the centennial of the great Frenchman’s passing. Debussy was inspired by the paintings of J. M. W. Turner, the great English painter of seascapes. In La Mer we hear the composer organizing sounds to evoke beautiful sunrises, violent sea storms and tranquil waves.
The spirit of Poland and the beauty of bel canto are well in the foreground in Chopin’s exquisitely fresh and vital First Piano Concerto with the young Thai virtuoso Anant Changwaiwit in the soloist seat. Chopin was only twenty when he wrote this world masterpiece. Yet the piece is a fully mature artistic statement with original themes and fantastic piano passages.
The orchestra also plays Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture. Mendelssohn found traveling truly inspirational. In the Hebrides we hear his impression from visiting the islands off the western coast of Scotland.
